PUNCHES PROJECT

The project presented in this website is the result of doctoral research work carried out during a three-year period from 2019 to 2022 at the Department of History of Arts and Performing Arts of the University of Florence under the coordination of Professor Stella Sonia Chiodo. The purpose of this database is to make accessible the study materials produced over the course of forty years by Erling Skaug during his long research and inventory work of punched decoration in Medieval paintings.

The website has three sections to access the materials and allows users to navigate by searching individual authors, works of art and individual punches. Additionally, the information contained here can be searched separately in the advanced research page and can be viewed in aggregate form through the Nodegoat platform, which was developed by Pim van Bree and Geert Kessels.

All the images produced during Skaug’s forty-year research work are also made available to scholars in the “Negatives” section, which contains all the images that have been digitized so far (1735) and links each of them to the works and punches represented.
